Communication is the base of our connection to others and the world that surrounds us. Without it, life would be pretty lonely and most likely pretty boring, too. Evidently, the best way to communicate with someone is by speaking the same language as them. Although you may speak the same language as someone, what if they fail to understand the meaning behind your words? This is a recurring problem in our society that we are failing to acknowledge, especially here in the United States.
The United States has one of the most dominant influences in the world. We, as Americans, often forget to acknowledge that there are more people in the world that do not have the same customs and beliefs as us. Because of this, there has been a decline of emphasis on the importance of learning more than one language in the last 100 years of education in the U.S.. This seems somewhat backwards, as travel and access to the other side of the world has become more accessible than ever.

With an increased vocabulary, someone that is bilingual may be able to communicate their ideas in a more effective way than someone who is monolingual. This brings us back to the idea that even if
someone speaks the same language as you, ideas may need to be reiterated in a different way to communicate your thoughts and ideas most effectively. Learning a new language is able to make this happen.
Learning a new language promotes surface level communication, and allows for greater communication and understanding on a more personal level. Learning a new language is not just about the words that it is composed of. When one learns a new language, they are able to immerse themselves in the new cultures that the langu age correlates with. Multilingual people are provided with the opportunity to gain new perspectives on the world and how other cultures differ from their own. By doing this, one is able to communicate with others in a more meaningful way than through just words themselves. They are able to truly understand someone else in a way that is greater than through traditional, surface level chit-chat. When you are able to connect with others in a more meaningful way, the barriers of everyday life are broken.
Communication is key to success in our world. Everything revolves around our ability to communicate well with others. The greatest way to improve communication on many different levels is by learning a second language. Communication in all aspects is vital to bring “the life” to life. With this being said, why wouldn’t someone want to improve their communication and their connection to the world around them?
